HENRI RIVIÈRE:
WATERCOLORS AND LITHOGRAPHS

Hôtel de la Plage, Sainte-Anne-la-Palud

June 19 - August 30, 2021

For the first time, the Hôtel de la Plage in Sainte-Anne-La-Palud welcomes in its historic rooms decorated with paintings by Mathurin Méheut (1882-1958) and Yvonne Jean-Haffen (1895) -1993), a summer exhibition dedicated to Henri Rivière (1864-1951), one of Brittany's greatest modern artists. Through several of his rare watercolours and his famous lithographs, it explores his links to Brittany.

Hanged between the paintings of Méheut and Jean-Haffen, two other great painters of Brittany, the works of Rivière, their eldest, naturally find their place in the rooms on the ground floor, widely open on the bay of Douarnenez, which inspired the artist so much. The watercolours representing Morgat or the bay of Paimpol sit alongside the inspired views of the bay of Douarnenez, as in Coucher de soleil (1898) or Bateaux au mouillage à Tréboul (1901).

Organised by gallery owners and art historians Tancrède Hertzog and Mathilde Le Coz, the exhibition presents more than ten original lithographs, such as Nuit en mer from 1897 and La falaise from 1898.  as well as several large watercolours, very rarely exhibited, revealing Rivière's creative process. Certain paintings by Méheut, such as the Sardiniers in front of Camaret (circa 1920) are directly inspired by the engravings by Rivière, which the artist admired, and are linked to them, creating an eloquent and unprecedented dialogue.
